Relationship Between Quality of Life with Physical Fitness and Home Environmental Factor Among Elderly Individuals

Objective Due to the rapid aging of the world population, it is important to determine the factors affecting the quality of life of these individuals and take precautions. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the quality of life with physical fitness and home environment features in elderly individuals. Method: This study was included 99 elderly individuals (51.5% female; 71.36 ± 6.50 years) ranging from 65 to 95 years of age. In order to evaluate the quality of life, physical fitness and home environmental characteristics of the participants, the Quality of Life Scale in Older People (CASP-19), Physical Fitness and Exercise Activity Levels of Older Adults Scale (PFES) and the Way of falling, Home Environmental Factor Evaluating Form (WIHFEF) were used. In evaluating data in addition to determining statistics Pearson correlation coefficient and Mann Whitney U test is used. Results: According to the analysis, a statistically significant relationship was found between the quality of life with physical fitness and environmental characteristics of the elderly (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The decreased physical fitness of elderly individuals and the increase of the risk of falling home environment characteristics negatively affect their quality of life. According to these results, it is important to evaluate the physical fitness of the elderly individuals and their home environment characteristics before the interventions aimed at increasing the quality of life of elderly individuals.
