A Study on the Vocabulary Mastery of English Department Students (A Descriptive Quantitative Research at Muhammadiyah Aceh University)

This study was conducted with the aims to know the vocabulary mastery level and the memorization strategy that used by the English Departmentstudents at Muhammadiyah Aceh University. The students of semester I were selected by random sampling technique with the consideration of the class policy that requires all students to memorize 350 words during one semester. The instruments used in this study were test and questionnaire. The result of the study showed that most of the students are in the mid frequency level. Two of them are even in high frequency level and none of the students’ vocabulary is indicated low frequency level. Furthermore, in memorizing the vocabulary, all of the students did grouping, acronym and imagery as memorystrategy. Keywords        :Vocabularytest, memorizing strategy, vocabulary mastery
