Greece's Egnatia Highway Tunnels

2006
This article provides an overview of the Egnatia Highway in Greece and its 73 tunnels. The author breaks the 680-kilometer highway, which stretches from the west coast of Greece to the Turkish border, into five stretches and describes in detail the geological characteristics through which the tunnels pass. He notes that the Egnatia Highway tunnels meet and often exceed European Union requirements, and describes tunnel guidelines that cover tunnel design. The author suggests solutions to typical problems in tunnel building in this area. In addition, a description is presented of the final lining of cast-in-place concrete, as well as the costs for recently completed tunnels along the route.
