Treatment of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine in ulcerative colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a colon mucosal and submucosal inflammatory disease,and its pathogenesis is still unclear. Treatment of ulcerative colitis is difficult yet. Generally,the treatment of Western medicine is to use some medicines including aminosalicylic acid,corticosteroids,immune modulators and anti-bacterial drugs. Although the effect is more precise,adverse reaction is more,and poor tolerance are occurred in patients. Ulcerative colitis is easy to recrudescence after stopping treatment. Treatment of traditional Chinese medicine is to use some herbal compound via oral,enema,and iontophoresis as well as multi-channel combination therapy. The treatment shows a better effect and a low-cost. The adverse reaction is less than Western medicine,but the effect is not better for severe ulcerative colitis than Western medicine. In this article,we introduced traditional Chinese medical viewpoint and Western medical viewpoint on treatment of ulcerative colitis.
