Recognition, Signals, and Pollen Responses in the Incompatibility Reaction in Papaver rhoeas

The process of pollination and fertilization in flowering plants involves a series of interactive events between male and female cells. One of the earliest stages in the process of fertilization is the recognition, and acceptance or rejection, of pollen grains alighting on the stigma of the recipient plant. Self- incompatibility (SI) involves these processes. We are particularly interested in the mechanism whereby incompatible pollen is inhibited, and the events that occur during a SI reaction.
