CONRAD TO AN UNIDENTIFIED CORRESPONDENT, 1916: AN UNPUBLISHED LETTER

While the identity of most of the recipients of letters from Conrad is well established, a handful of letters directed merely to "Dear Sir" allow only informed speculation as to the addressee's identity. One such mystery recently surfaced as the result of tracing down a Conrad letter described in the October 1971 auction catalogue (No.742) of the Naison Charavay, Paris. [1] Described as an "L. A. S. en anglais. Hr Ashford, 28 juin 1916. lp. in-8 oblong", the letter was also summarized in French. The text of the holograph, written on oblong Capel House notepaper, is as follows:
