ACCESSIBLE VEHICLES, MORE THAN JUST A WHEELCHAIR LIFT

In late July, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed into law. As part of the sweeping act, virtually all new transit vehicles operating in a fixed-route mode had to be accessible. But what exactly is accessible? A wide variety of components help make a transit vehicle truly accessible. The article provides illustrations of these components and suggests the five key resources each community transportation manager should have on the office bookshelves; together they form a comprehensive study of ADA-accessible transportation.
