The invention relates to a device for detecting the position of a speed steps selector lever for selecting a gear or a transmission gear position of a motor vehicle. The apparatus comprises a drive arranged at the selector lever signal transmitter and a signal transmitter to the spaced-apart signal receivers, wherein a different relative position between the signal transmitter and signal receiver is detectable at different speed levels and gear settings. The invention further relates to a motor vehicle with a corresponding device.
