Indirect speech in modern female prose

2019
The article discusses the specifics of the functioning of indirect speech in modern female prose based on the material of the works of T. Tolstya, L. Ulitskaya, V. Tokareva.  For the first time A.Pushkin addressed an indirect speech, using this stylistic device to reveal the psychodynamics of his characters. Then his discovery was presented in the works of M. Lermontov, I. Turgenev, F. Dostoevsky, L. Tolstoy. Modern writers are actively turning to this technique. The study of indirect speech in linguistics began at the end of the 19th century and continues till this day, because modern literary texts provide good material for studying this phenomenon.  Indirect speech is a form of speech transmission in an artistic narrative, one of the methods of subjective authorial narration, as well as a narrative method that combines the subjective-speech plans of the author, narrator and character. Indirect speech is widely used in literary works as stylistic and syntactic methods. Indirect speech freely and accurately conveys other people's speech, reveals the reader the inner world of the character and creates the basis for communicative interaction between the author and the character. Therefore, indirect speech is not only a concise and expressive means of transmitting the character’s speech, but also a way of giving the text a more vibrant and emotionally expressive coloring, which helps the reader to understand the deep meaning of the work.
