Development and Deployment of ICT DIY Standards in Support of Internet of Things: A Qualitative Approach

2016
The advent and wide deployment of open-source hardware, open-source software and 3D printing enabled people to make things instead of purchasing or acquiring complete products. The authors defined such activities as "ICT DIY" with the hopes of spreading and disseminating DIY culture, that will, in turn, further popularize the ICT-based maker ecosystem. In this sense, the authors have developed a number of ICT DIY standards since 2014 to provide guidance to makers especially non-professionals. We have also and had open discussions with international experts to share best practices and raise awareness on ICT DIY in ITU-T. In this paper, the empirical impact of ICT DIY standards towards the actual industry in South Korea is studied and analyzed. The analysis is followed by the discussion of the relationship between ICT DIY and IoT, and the general requirements for how ICT DIY can act as a facilitator to realize the hyper-connected society. The authors concluded by providing implications of the development of ICT DIY and its future impacts.
