Alumina coated articles and coating of these articles

1990
PURPOSE: To stabilize chemically vapor deposited Al 2 O 3 phases by specifying the Al 2 O 3 layers into contact with the layers of the carbide, etc., of the articles coated with TiC or ≥1 double layers consisting of the carbide, nitride, etc., associated therewith. CONSTITUTION: The Al 2 O 3 layers in contact with the layers of the carbide, nitride, carbonitride or oxycarbonitride of the coated articles consisting of TiC or the carbide, nitride, carbonitride or oxycarbonitride, etc., associated therewith and Al 2 O 3 consist of epitaxially grown κ-Al 2 O 3 or θ-Al 2 O 3 . The Al 2 O 3 is directly nucleated on the nonxidized or slightly oxidized TiC surfaces, and eventually the epitaxial relation between the TiC layers and the Al 2 O 3 layers is established. The reduction to TiO, such as Ti 2 O 3 does not arise and, thereafter, pores are entirely eliminated. The Al 2 O 3 layers are well joined to the base bodies. COPYRIGHT: (C)1991,JPO
