Analysis of a Mixing Model and its Application to a Multistage Column Reactor

1996
A mixing model is presented on the basis of the tanks-in-series concept with non-ideal mixing in each stage. An exact solution for residence time distribution curves has been obtained. Experimental investigations have been carried out in a rotating disc contactor (RDC). The residence time distribution has been measured in a limited range of flow rates for confirmation of the validity of the mathematical model. The method of weighted moments has been used for the determination of model parameters. Analytical expressions based on the above model have been derived for fractional conversion calculation of a homogeneous second-order reaction for the limiting cases of complete segregation and maximum mixedness. For conversion studies in the RDC column the saponification reaction between ethyl acetate and sodium hydroxide has been chosen.
