A Switched-Reluctance Motor Drive Powered by Switch-Mode Rectifier with Battery Energy Storage Buffer

2020
This paper presents a three-phase full-bridge boost switch-mode rectifier (SMR) fed switched-reluctance motor (SRM) drive with energy storage buffer. First, the power circuits and control schemes of the two power stages are properly designed. Except for having good line drawn power quality, the boostable DC-link voltage of the SRM drive can enhance the SRM driving performance in wide speed range. And the recovered regenerative braking energy can be sent back to the grid successfully. Then, a battery storage system with bidirectional interface DC-DC converter is established and connected to the motor drive DC-link to provide energy buffer. Through the proposed parallel operation strategy, the possible inter-connected operations include: (i) Grid-to-battery (G2B) charging operation: the battery can be charged from the grid with good line drawn power quality; (ii) B2G discharging operation: the battery can be sent power back to the grid through the interface converter and the SMR; and (iii) Battery buffer operation: the SRM drive is powered by the utility grid and the battery simultaneously with the proposed parallel operation strategy
