Just-in-time - a Manufacturing Strategy for Continuous Improvement

1986
The paper provides an overview of the Just-In-Time (JIT) manufacturing strategy. The misunderstandings surrounding the popular terminology used are reviewed and the underlying concepts and real aims discussed. Traditional manufacturing approaches are compared with some of the key JIT principles and techniques. The present low standards of performance in manufacturing are highlighted as opportunities for continuous improvement by utilising the JIT strategy. To achieve higher standards of performance, an organisation needs to believe in a better way. Management must commit itself to, and support, the action.
