Regenerative Strategies for the Central Nervous System

2016
Injury or disease to the central nervous system may result in substantial debilitating consequences for the effected patient. Current clinical treatments fall short of directly addressing the disease/injury pathology that blocks neuroregeneration to restore full functional recovery. However, recent advances in neural tissue engineering and regenerative medicine provide new avenues and approaches to tackling multi-faceted disease/injury pathology. This review highlights common barriers for regeneration in the central nervous system, the current/upcoming pharmaceutical therapies, and tissue engineering/regenerative medicine approaches.
