ABSTRACT This study is basically an approach to the most common issues in medical practice related to disorders of the acid-base balance. First, we discuss the essential concepts, the physiology of blood pH control mechanisms and primary changes in the acid-base balance. Related disorders of the acid-base balance are illustrated with specific clinical cases covering the pathophysiology, diagnosis and therapy. This text, in a didactic process, aims to support the understanding, the diagnosis and therapeutic approaches to be taken by medical doctors.
