Existing Protection and Challenges

Any new technology that comes with advantages would also impose some issues or challenges. For instance, incorporating FACTS devices in the transmission system may confuse the existing relaying system because these devices manipulate the system parameters such as line current, voltage, and impedance. Similarly, the distribution system embedded with DG technologies increases the penetration level and, thus, may degrade the power quality and disturb the existing protection system. All these issues/challenges possessed by the latest technologies will be discussed in this chapter.
