A multifaceted comprehensive student success plan for accelerated BSN students in a concept-based curriculum
2020
Abstract Nursing Program leaders must identify strategies to ensure student retention and success. Prematriculation support, learning, and course assessments are valid components of an effective student success plan (SSP). Using standardized, nationally normalized examinations effectively manages student progression and identifies at-risk students. To ensure student success in a 12-month concept-based curriculum, we implemented an innovative multifaceted SSP where students: 1) could access web-based resources offering studying and learning tools; 2) had their learning styles evaluated, with results summarized to guide them; and 3) were continuously encouraged to proactively learn. Individualized SSPs encompass data from prematriculation assessments, faculty-constructed exams, and standardized tests. The Learning Navigator (LN) assisted students throughout their curriculum in various support capacities. Ongoing evaluation of student success strategies ensures effectiveness, and a multifaceted SSP offers numerous opportunities to succeed by encouraging students to partner with faculty and support staff and take initiative in their academic success.
