Genetic resistance in mungbean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) germplasm against mungbean yellow mosaic virus under rainfed conditions of Jammu

2008
Forty genotypes of mungbean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) were evaluated under natural epiphytotic conditions during Kharif, 2007 to identify the sources of resistance against Mungbean Yellow Mosaic (Begomovirus) Virus (MYMV). Severe infections of MYMV were observed in the middle of August and all the check lines turned completely yellow with a population of 6–10 whiteflies per plant which transmits mungbean yellow mosaic virus. The natural disease infection was quite severe meeting ample requirements for an effective screening of mungbean genotypes. Out of 40 mungbean genotypes, five genotypes (DPM 90-1, DPM 90-2, HUM-1, IPM-04-2 and IPM-04-3) were found highly resistant, seventeen showed moderate resistance (MR) response while five genotypes showed average infection for MYMV disease. Thirteen genotypes were graded as susceptible (S) to highly susceptible (HS). No genotype showed immune response against yellow mosaic virus. The highly resistant genotypes provide a valuable plant genetic resource of mungbean for use in future breeding programmes.
