A display device 200 comprises aligned optical shutters 239 and backlight cells 289 forming pixel windows through which images printed on a background can be hidden or revealed. A driver 299 mutually controls the transition of the elements. The image may be printed on a mask layer 250. A colour layer 260 may be included to provide coloured illumination. The optical shutter cell may comprise a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) material with dichroic dye molecules added. The backlight may comprise an electroluminescent (EL) layer. The device is particularly suited for use with a touchscreen display 290.
