The administration of methyl parathion as a single dose (12 mg / kg, p.o.) or chronic treatment (1 mg/kg/ day p.o. for 30 days) caused structural damage and loss of cells in the granular layer of cerebellum from adult Wistar male rats (weight 275g ± 25g), recorded by semiquantitative histological analysis. When we administered the standardized extract of Ginkgo biloba (69.8 µg/kg/ day i.p., every other day for 30 days) or N-acetylcysteine (150 mg/kg/day i.p., every other day for 30 days) as antioxidants, there was a significant neuroprotective effect (P <0.05) in the granular layer cells of rat cerebellum, only during chronic treatment. The results demonstrate the antioxidant neuroprotective effect that revert the damage caused by methyl parathion in the rat cerebellum.
