On Being Guided, Signals & Rules: from Bühler to Wittgenstein

Kevin Mulligan has examined in several papers and a book the conceptual relations between the descriptions of mind, language and colours in the philosophies of Brentano’s heirs and the descriptions given later by Wittgenstein. In this paper, he looks at what Buhler and Wittgenstein have to say about the phenomenon of being guided by something and two of their favourite examples—reading and our relations to rules.
