Design management through Building Information Modeling (BIM): a review

2013
With the construction industry becoming more and more complex and fragmented due to the involvement of the numerous professionals, collaboration between these parties from the design phase itself are becoming a critical parameter for the success of the project. The emerging information technologies offer a great potential for the greater collaboration and building information modeling (BIM) is one of the recent technology that IT have to offer for the construction industry. The paper presents state of the art and in depth literature review of the importance of the collaboration in the design management and what building information modeling (BIM) have to offer for the collaborative design. Only online accessible literature was reviewed &no site data collection was done for this paper. It was found that BIM is most effective only when used in collaborative environment when BIM is used in design management as collaborating tool it helps in reduction of the amount of rework, detects collision way earlier they occur in design stage, introduces the lean thinking in the industry automatically and many more advantages discussed in the paper. The paper also keeps a window open for the further research as it was found that the organizational culture and human aspect is still missing in the collaborative design using building information modeling.
