Synthesis of 2-oxocephalosporins

Abstract A synthesis of the 2-oxocephalosporin nucleus ( 12 ) has been achieved starting from penicillin V. Some physical and chemical properties of this new ring system and the preparation of the corresponding free acid 2 (R 1 = CH 2 OC 6 H 5 ) for biological testing are also described.
