A hermetic compressor is provided with: a hermetic container for storing a lubricating oil at the bottom thereof; an electric motor having a stator and a rotor; a drive shaft mounted to the rotor; a compression mechanism for compressing a refrigerant by means of the rotation of the drive shaft; a rotary pressure-increasing mechanism provided above the rotor and increasing the pressure of a refrigerant; a circular cylindrical side wall surrounding the rotary pressure-increasing mechanism and partitioning a space above the electric motor into an outer space and an inner space; and a discharge pipe for allowing a refrigerant to flow out of the inner space into a circuit outside the hermetic container. A refrigerant gas discharged from the compression mechanism into the hermetic container moves from a space below the electric motor, through a rotor gas hole in the rotor, to the upper end of the rotor and flows into the rotary pressure-increasing mechanism to be thereby increased in pressure. The refrigerant gas then flows to the inner space to thereby increase pressure within the inner space and is discharged to the outside from the discharge pipe while preventing a refrigerant gas from flowing from the outer space into the inner space.
