Optimized Swing Equation Control for Battery Energy Storage Systems

2019
In this study, an Optimized Swing Equation Control (OSEC) for supplying system inertia (SI) by Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) is presented. It enables BESS that function as Virtual Synchronous Machines (VSM) to achieve the same dynamic frequency stability while their power output is significantly reduced. Due to its high penetration of wind turbines, the region of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein in Northern Germany serves as an example for the development of power systems towards low inertia conditions. A detailed grid model of the region is set up in DIgSILENT PowerFactory to develop an advanced concept for inertia support using BESS with OSEC.
