Optical Microbubble Resonator: A Novel Structure for Sensing Applications

2014
Recently a new class of optical resonant microcavities, the so called microbubble resonators (MBRs) for their particular shape, have been demonstrated. Their feature of combining the unique properties of whispering gallery mode resonators (WGMRs) with the intrinsic capability of integrated microfluidics makes these novel microstructures suitable for possible sensing applications. Here a new fabrication technique of MBRs is presented, based on a modified commercial fibre fusion splicer. Moreover, preliminary results on their working as refractometer are reported.
