Development Of A Sensor Detecting Eyelid Positions

2008
This paper reports on the development of a sensor detecting eyelid position, which can be used as a component of a safety system designed to help prevent forward collisions. In these safety systems, A camera-based sensor is used to detect driver’s facing direction; when the system detects that a driver is not facing forward, the timing of the warnings issued is moved up. The authors report on the new sensor, which detects the driver’s eyelid position to detect possible inattention or sleepiness. The paper presents the results of system tests conducted under different lighting conditions and with test subjects with different facial shapes. The authors conclude that these sensors contribute to the robustness of the system, which is presently at a practical level for actual application to mass production cars.
