Failure analysis of damper friction plate of heavy-duty vehicle

The failed damper friction plates of a heavy vehicle were analyzed.The results show that the macroscopic expression of the failed friction plates presents surface burning,surface adhesion and surface wear,while the microscopic expression shows adhesion and furrow wears.The main reason of failure is that the solid lubricating film formed by the polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)composite(the lining material of the friction plates)is easily spoilaged due to the poor heat resistance of PTFE.The direct and effective method to resolve the failure is to improve the properties of the PTFE composite to obtain a stable solid lubricating film.
