EFECTIVIDAD DEL ENFOQUE EXTENSIVO EN LA ACTITUD HACIA LA LECTURA DE ESTUDIANTES DE INGLÉS COMO LENGUA EXTRANJERA (ILE) The Effectiveness of the Extensive Approach Regarding the Reading Attitude of Students of English as a Foreign Language (EFL)

2012
The main objective of this quasi-experimental study was to determine the effectiveness of the extensive approach regarding the reading attitude of students of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) from the Universidad Nacional Experimental “Francisco de Miranda” (UNEFM). A sample of 42 students was non randomly chosen out of a population of 63 subjects studying EFL at UNEFM, in Coro, Falcon state, Venezuela. The sample was divided into two groups: control and experimental. Both groups completed a questionnaire about their attitude towards EFL reading before and after the extensive reading intervention, in which only the experimental group participated. Students of this group also answered a questionnaire to monitor their reading experience. The results show that the program promoted positive attitudes towards EFL reading, thus confirming the experimental hypothesis. We conclude that extensive reading is effective to improve the cognitive, affective and behavioral components of attitude.
