Abstract 11312: Psychosocial Factors Influencing Mental Health in Adults with Congenital Heart Disease in Japan

Background: Adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) patients face unique social challenges that are related to psychosocial adjustment and mental health. Despite this, studies specifically examining psychosocial issues and the mental health of ACHD patients are few in Japan and we do not have any knowledge about the psychosocial mechanism related to the mental health of patients. The aim of this study was (1) to compare the psychosocial aspects of ACHD with that of a control group, (2) to determine psychosocial factors influencing the mental health of patients. Method: Seventy-two ACHD patients (aged 18-39 years; 57% male) and 86 control participants (aged 18-39 years; 48% male) completed SF36 which measures mental health and self-report questionnaires composed of 4 psychosocial measures including Independency-dependency on parents, Social problem solving, Locus of control and Self-esteem.
