The Destiny Algorithm

1988
As this world, or at least part of this world, became more and more inter-and intra-mediated by cybernetics systems-wires, radio waves, transceivers of all kinds designed by and for all bandwidths-dependent on computing and reality-stimulating devices of all kinds, a number of ancient problems, but in a new mode, arose; some anticipated and chewed-over by the ancient philosophers and illusionists, others unanticipated. Well, it had to happen, didn't it? For instance signs of autonoverse behavior cropped up in the electronic circuitry. Well and good: Artificial Intelligence was what a good part of the cybernetic community wanted. This community thought that this need had arisen with its eponymous heroes, like John Von Neuman and Alan Turing and Norbert Wiener but, in fact, if you looked back far enough, you would find that AI had long been a dream of the ancient Greeks, Chinese, Hebrews, Persians, Romans, Indians, Egyptians, the Renaissance Magi ... It was the Frankenstein Problem, or, as they used to call it in Old Hollywood, the Finkelstein Problem. There are those who said that Finkelstein has always been with us. It is just that he/it/she/it has found a more congenial resting place, a body, so to speak, in the electronic world. And it is always assumed that this intelligence had to be of a higher and unimaginably more powerful and complex order. What is it that Oedipus was said to have encountered? "That which is not-man." A regular Finkelstein. Of which Oedipus was also heard to say, "What needs it? Stay away from it. It will fuck you up every time." How did it come to be? (More properly speaking, one should say, "How will it have come to have been?") Well, there comes some point in time when
