Doublet Thermal Metadevice

2019
Thermal management, with a twist: The function of a traditional thermal metamaterial is predetermined once the structure is fixed, and it is difficult to tune thermal conductivities $i\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}n$ $s\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}i\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}t\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}u$. This work proposes a doublet thermal metadevice that enables multiple functions by mechanically rotating identical singlet configurations. The doublet device consists of two conductive materials in a stacked layout with a sort of curved chessboard structure, so that its function can be reconfigured by adjusting the angular displacement of the moving parts. Simulations show that a single device can serve as a thermal cloak, concentrator, or rotator, or can appear transparent.
