High-temperature steam electrolysis

2022
Abstract Hydrogen production with reduced electricity consumption is achieved with high temperature steam electrolysis. The technology is based on solid oxide cells that are able to operate reversibly in a fuel cell for the production of electricity and heat. This chapter gives a general overview of the technology with details about cell materials and architecture as well as manufacturing processes from cells to stacks. The chapter then reviews performance and durability from singles cells to larger stacks operated under steam electrolysis for long-term steady-state operation as well as flexible operation. Structural analysis results after electrolysis operation are presented and main sources of degradation discussed. Finally, system’s designs and technical and economical analysis give a prospective view of the technology cost in comparison with the other technologies of water electrolysis.
