Reactions in the system vanadium pentafluoride-xenon hexafluoride

1982
Abstract In the system XeF 6 VF 5 two new compounds XeF 6 .VF 5 and XeF 6 .2VF 5 have been synthesized, in addition to the already known 2XeF 6 .VF 5 (1). The Raman spectra indicate that ionic character decreases in the series 2XeF 6 .VF 5 , XeF 6 .VF 5 and XeF 6 .2VF 5 . The compound 2XeF 6 .VF 5 can be described as an ionic compound Xe 2 F + 11 VF − 6 , while XeF 6 .2VF 5 can be formulated as a molecular adduct, with XeF 6 .VF 5 being intermediate in character. The melting points of 2XeF 6 .VF 5 and XeF 6 .2VF 5 are 97° and 39°, respectively, while XeF 6 .VF 5 decomposes below its melting point to 2XeF 6 .VF 5 and VF 5 .
