ANTIULCER EFFECT OF COMBINATION OF TURMERIC (Curcuma domestica Val) AND PROPOLIS EXTRACTS ON ACETOSAL-INDUCED ULCER IN MALE WISTAR RAT

2017
Turmeric (Curcuma domestica Val) and propolis showed antiulcer activity as well as gastroprotective effect on the gastric mucosa. The combination of both extracts is suggested to show a better antiulcer activity. This study aimed to determine antiulcer activity of turmeric and propolis extracts combination on acetosal-induced ulcerative rat model. Male Wistar rats were randomly distributed into 7 groups, each group consist of 5 rats. All of the animals were fasted from food for 18 hours before ulcer induction. Ulceration was induced by giving acetosal orally for 7 days. After induction performed, each group was treated with tragacanth (positive and negative control), ranitidine (comparator), combination of turmeric and propolis extracts (formula 1 and 2), turmeric extract and propolis extract alone for 7 days. The rats were sacrificed at day 15th, and the gastric organ was taken. The number of lesions and ulcer severity were determined through macroscopic and microscopic observation. Group treated with combination formula 1 showed significant decrease in number of lesions compared to positive control group, ranitidine group, and group treated with propolis extract only (p <0.05). In conclusion, combination of turmeric and propolis extracts has a better antiulcer effect than propolis extract alone or ranitidine.
