Interpretation of SCPT Data Using Cross-over and Cross-Correlation Methods

2004
A common method of determining arrival times of polarized shear (S) waves in the seismic cone penetration (SCPT) test is the cross-over method. This method relies on personal judgment to pick first arrivals and is difficult to automate. A better approach is to use cross-correlation methods, which rely less on operator judgment and can be automated to increase both efficiency and reliability of analysis. This paper uses a case study to illus- trate the use of both the cross-over and cross-correlation methods to calculate shear wave velocity (V s ) in the SCPT test method.
