1P-649 : Effect of electron beam irradiation on carbon fiber micro-defects and mechanical properties

2019
In this study, micro-defects were controlled by irradiating electron beam to improve the mechanical properties of carbon fibers. The electron beam was irradiated at 10 kGy (using a 1.5 MeV accelerator in air). Total dose is 100-500 kGy, tensile strength of carbon fiber was evaluated by using universal testing machine (UTM). Surface morphology were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In addition, the microstructure was analyzed by X-ray diffraction analyzer (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy (Raman). In conclusion, the electron beam treatment controls structure micro-defects to improve the tensile strength by up to 14%.
