Formed article of a biodegradable polymer composition

1998
A biodegradable article comprises a blend of biodegradable polymers in the form of a continuous phase of at least one aliphatic polyester which is polybutylene succinate or polyethylene adipate, and a disperse phase of polylactic acid, the latter being dispersed as particles in the former and wherein the former comprises not less than 50 wt.% of the composition. The continuous phase may also contain a filler such as talc, CaCO 3 , clay, kaolin, carbon, mica, silica, MgO, Mg[OH] 2 , BaSO 3 , of which talc is preferred. The dispersion of the polylactic acid in the other polyester is achieved by mixing the polymers whilst ensuring that the polybutylene succinate or polyethylene adipate is the major component. The preferred articles are various types of fastener.
