Performance evaluation of error resilient tools for MPEG-4 video transmission over a mobile channel

2002
The paper deals with a. research project dealing with the transmission of video over terrestrial trunked radio (TETRA) mobile channels. The deployment of a reliable and efficient video communication service over TETRA mobile channels faces two major constraints: TETRA's limited available bandwidth and high channel error rates. For these reasons, the effective transmission of video over TETRA mobile channels requires not only the use of efficient compression techniques capable of reducing the bandwidth demand, but also the use of error-resilient video coding. The ISO MPEG-4 video compression standard is the right choice to fulfill the two requirements. The paper presents a study of MPEG-4 encoded video transmission over TETRA mobile channels. An evaluation of the performance of various error resilient tools in the MPEG-4 video codec is also presented.
