SUSTENTABILIDADE NO ARQUIPÉLAGO DO MARAJÓ: UMA AVALIAÇÃO A PARTIR DO ÍNDICE DE DESENVOLVIMENTO SUSTENTÁVEL PARA MUNICÍPIOS (IDSM)

2021
The increasing use of the terms sustainable development and sustainability has fostered the development of methodologies capable of quantitatively expressing sustainable or unsustainable realities at the global, national, regional and local levels. In this article, the sustainability of the municipalities of the Marajo mesorregion, in the state of Para, do institutes research and government provide evaluated using the Sustainable Development Index for Municipalities (IDSM), created by Martins and Cândido (2012), based on secondary data agencies. From this methodology, it is possible to measure municipal sustainability through six dimensions (social, demographic, economic, political-institutional, environmental and cultural) and four levels of sustainability (critical, alert, acceptable and ideal). The results showed that 88% of the municipalities of the Marajo mesoregion are classified at the alert level, while 12% are at an acceptable level. This demonstrates the fragility of the archipelago mainly in economic, social and environmental aspects, thus requiring the formulation of integrated public policies to leverage the development of the region in a sustainable way.
