Morphological Characterisation Of Hot Pepper (CAPSICUM SPP) Germplasm In Ghana.

2003
Thirty-nine accessions of hot pepper were characterised using their morphological characters. Fifty — seven point nine percent of them were compact in growth habit. More than half the population studied were glabrous for both stems and leaves which predisposed them to severe mite infestation. There were few germplasm which had abundant hairs on stems (7.69%) and leaves (5.31%). nese showed no symptoms of mites ifrfestation. Two leaf types were observed in the population, slender leaf type (leaf lengthAvidth ratio> 2.2) and broad leaf type (leaf length/width ratio< 1.9). About 80% of the population were of slender leaf type. There was a high positive correlation between leaf shape and fruit shape (r= 0.912**). All plants with slender leaves had elongated fruits while the broad leaf plants had either conical or campanulated fruits. Twenty point five one percent (20.51 %) of the accessions had dark green immature fruits a character which is very much desired on the export market.
