DETERMINANTS OF INJURIES IN BARGE ACCIDENTS

1999
This study investigates determinants of the number of fatal and non-fatal injuries in barge vessel accidents. Negative binomial regression indicate that among types of accidents, fire/explosions incur the greatest number of fatal and non-fatal injuries, followed by collisions for fatalities and material/equipment failures for non-fatalities, all else held constant. The greatest number of non-fatal injuries occur when a barge is docked or moored than when underway or adrift. Further, a tank barge accident is expected to have .948% more fatalities than a bulk barge accident and fatalities are expected to increase 1.29% when the weather is foggy at the time of the accident.
