Pulse irradiation of aqueous solutions containing ferrous and chloride ions: Reaction between Cl2- and HO2
1977
Measurements have been made of the reduced yields of ferric ions which are obtained when pulses of fast electrons are used to irradiate air-saturated solutions of ferrous ions containing various concentrations of chloride ions. The yields for solutions containing up to 10-2 mol dm-3 chloride cannot be explained by interaction between H and Cl or Cl2- but can be quantitatively accounted for if the reaction,
Cl2-+HO2→2Cl-+H++O2
takes place with a rate constant of (4.5±0.5) × 109 dm3 mol-1 s-1.
