Characterisation of the shallow subsurface: implications for urban infrastructure and environmental assessment
2003
Civil and geotechnical engineering and environmental applications depend on a precise definition of the shallow subsurface. The very shallow urban underground environment, where many infrastructure and utilities elements are located, presents very difficult characterisation problems. Characterising the deeper subsurface is important for groundwater resource evaluations, environmental contamination assessments, and for some infrastructure applications such as underground storage facilities.
