Post Intubation Phonatory Insufficiency: A novel surgical treatment

Abstract Post Intubation Phonatory Insufficiency as a result of prolonged intubation in premature neonates is a challenging condition to diagnose and treat. An endotracheal tube can cause an erosive injury to the medial surface of the arytenoid cartilage resulting in a permanent divot or gap in the posterior glottis between the arytenoid and the vocal ligament and cord. There have been many treatments proposed and performed for posterior glottic insufficiency. We describe a novel surgical approach to address this problem in two adolescents with severe breathy dysphonia and have had promising results.
