Fundamentals of College Teaching: a course for engineering doctoral students

This paper describes "Fundamentals of College Teaching", a course for doctoral students at the Colorado School of Mines. The learning objectives for the course are to help students become better able to: (1) describe and apply the principles of learning and teaching in a college setting, (2) design, deliver, and assess a college course, and (3) apply teaching methods that foster higher order thinking. Students in the course demonstrate their teaching ability through microteaching presentations. Qualitative assessment undertaken at the beginning and end of the course suggests that students end the course with a more student-centered model of teaching.
