Reliability of tensile fracture strength of Co-based metallic glass microwires by Weibull statistics

2019
In this study, continuous Co46Fe20B23Si5Nb6 metallic glass microwires (MGMs) with a smooth surface and negligible fluctuation in diameter size were prepared by the melt-spinning method. The mechanical properties were critically evaluated by mechanical tensile tests. The resulting Co46Fe20B23Si5Nb6 MGMs show high tensile fracture strength of the order of 4000 MPa and perform a large strain of similar to 4% prior to fracture. The Weibull statistical analysis shows that the tensile fracture strength reliability parameter of the Co-based MGMs reflected by the Weibull modulus is 13.70. Meanwhile, it demonstrated that the Co-based MGMs exhibit a brittle fracture under tensile experiments. The experimental results provide in-depth understanding of the mechanics and the reliability under loading for designing Co-based MGMs sensors with desired properties.
