Prevention of Atherosclerosis in Childhood

Atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease begin in childhood. Elevated risk factor levels are related to development of fatty streaks and fibrous plaques during adolescence. This article summarizes findings from the Bogalusa Heart Study, a longitudinal survey of children and adolescents, and outlines methods pediatric health professionals can use to prevent adult cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality.
