Selection of concentrate management approach

2020
Abstract This chapter compares the concentrate management alternatives described in the previous chapters and presents criteria and methodology for selection of the most suitable management approach for the site-specific conditions of a given project. Each method of concentrate disposal has advantages and disadvantages, which are highly site-specific. The approach to management of concentrate must be integrated at concept stage to identify all feasible methods of disposal to determine optimum life-cycle project costs. Feasibility is influenced by prevailing regulations, environmental considerations, and physical constraints while the cost of development is impacted by mitigation measures, location to required infrastructure, climate, and reliability. The chapter also provides a brief overview of the future of concentrate management and discusses common misconceptions on the impact of production of desalinated water on the environment.
